Spacey Game News 3/25/14 – There-Went-March Edition

Buried Under News!

Buried Under News!

Hello my friends! I’m sorry I’ve been so absent of late, but wow am I tired! A short time ago, I went to Yosemite for the better part of a week (some pics here) for a wedding in which my girlfriend was the maid of honor. As awesome a time as I had, it was EXHAAAAUSTING and I feel like I’m still recovering from the sleep deficit, so I’ve just only had energy for some basic gaming needs, you know? ;) There’s been a ton of news out since then, however, so I’m gonna try to get to all of it. Here goes!

Wow, that was almost all of March up until now, huh? Yeeesh! We’re not done yet though, as I have some deals as well as some related news. First off, in deals, Steam’s recent rash of weeklong deals includes Space Trader: Merchant Marine for $1.49 (though the page itself says $4.99 for some reason). Finally, in kinda related news, GOG announced that they’ll be supporting Linux starting later this year, which could see some of our favorite spacey classics reaching that platform.

WHEW that was a lot of stuff to get through. This post took forever to write, but y’all are worth it. :) Have a great day folks!

Spacey Game News and Deals 3/4/14: The No-Clever-Tagline Edition

Folded Newspapers

Yay News!

Hello my friends, and welcome to another day of newsiness!! There’s plenty of goodness to get to today, including a bundle and some other stuff, so let’s get to it! Remember, all videos will be embedded below the cut. :)

We’re not done yet folks! First, in the bundle department, Bundle Stars’ Adrenaline Bundle is pretty damned great, as it has the fantastic Ring Runner, and in non-spacey game goodness, also both Etherlords games (which are awesome) and plenty more. Get this one if you can, folks.

Then, in the kinda related department, we have more faction information for Endless Legend, the fantasy strategy game from the Endless Space folks. We also have three new models from SOL Command for use in your space game, including a Personal Mining Unit, a base of operation for the PMUs and a sleek Dobrev frigate.

Finally, in not-related-but-still-interesting news comes word that Kickstarter passed the $1 billion mark in pledges, over $215 million coming from gaming alone, which is pretty awesome. Thanks VGN247 for the heads up!

That’s it for today folks, have a great one!

Spacey Game Newsies and Dealsies 2/25/14: The Holy-Crap-Where-Did-February-Go Edition…

News and Coffee

Both of These in Abundance Today…

Helloooo my friends, and welcome to the NEWS. I can’t believe it’s been almost a month since I did one of these, and I am so sorry for the gap. February’s been a CRAZY month, as it always is for me, and I’ve had to let some of the news go bye bye since it’s a bit on the older side at this point. Therefore, this post will cover the last week or so of news and stuff. With that said, let’s dive in! Remember, all videos will be embedded after the cut.

  • Jumpgate – Not sure why, but registration has been temporarily disabled, which ssssuuuuucks, and totally gets in the way of me trying to recruit more people into the game. I’ll let’cha all know when it’s back up. ;)
  • Deep Space Settlement – There’s a new video showing off some awesome looking gameplay, and new screenshots of shield generators in action. Now stop bugging me, Matthias. ;) (Actually, don’t, someone bugging me would actually be awesome)
  • Elite: Dangerous – Rock, Paper Shotgun has two articles covering the game, one an impressions piece covering the alpha, the other a chatroom article between some of their writers.
  • Wing Commander – The CIC has word of George Oldziey’s Kickstarter campaign and how it’s going, along with some stories he’s shared from his days composing for the third and fourth installments in the series.
  • The Last Federation – According to a post on the official forums, the game has been delayed until April, which personally is fine by me. Get it done right, not quickly, I like to say. :)
  • PULSAR: Lost Colony – The alpha version of the game is on track to be released…OMG, today!…according to their Kickstarter. Can’t wait to get mine, so stay tuned for a preview! :)
  • Interstellaria – The developer shared some pieces from their Design a Ship contest, which I believe is currently ongoing.
  • Kerbal Space Program - The devs have launched a logo contest for the various Kerbin manufacturers, around two dozen in all. Have artistic skills? Check it out!
  • Galaxial – A new blog entry has a stress test video and some new screenshots as well, and it looks to be coming along nicely.
  • Star Citizen – Tons of new stuff lately on this one! From the official site, they announced that they’ve reached $39 million in crowdfunding, with a procedural R&D team being hired as the $41 million stretch goal, which has me damned excited. There’s also a new Ten for the Chairman video, a new episode of The Next Great Starship, a concept art gallery for the Mustang (a new low-level ship in the game) and part four of their ongoing DATELINE: SESEN fiction series. Elsewhere, Eurogamer is reporting that CI has teamed with Warhorse — the developer of the awesome looking Kingdom Come RPG — to help each other make the most of the Crytek engine. Finally, Stick and Rudder looks at the ongoing and confusing backlash effect surrounding the game which, like the author, I don’t understand. WHEW!
  • Tactical Space Command – The Mac/iPad “Harpoon in Space” game has gotten a recent update which includes a scenario editor among other things, and the developer has released a video showing it off. We’ll also have the developer on the podcast in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for that.
  • Void Destroyer – There’s a new Let’s Play video of the game from YouTube user Dealspwn, which is a fun watch. It also reminds me I need to work on mine. ;)
  • Vendetta Online – A new update brings improvemenets to player capital ships, which apparently is a big deal as previously they didn’t work the same way as NPC cap ships did. I could see how that would be damned annoying.
  • Paragon – According to a post on IndieDB, alpha 4 of the game is now available for purchase on their website for a whole $5. The update has new ships, 3D cockpits, mouse flight and more. I totally plan to pick this up soon.
  • Epic Space Game – There’s a new official trailer for the game detailing some of the game’s features.
  • EVE Online – A new comic called EVE: True Stories is available in comic shops or through the Dark Horse Digital app. This comic details the real events surrounding the fall of the Band of Brothers alliance. Nifty! Thanks VG247!
  • Space Engineers – A new version of the game is out, and a new video details all the changes and updates.
  • New Games – Finally, in kinda news, I found a bevy of new games recently through friends or perusing the usual digital distribution sites. In the more serious, core-gamey column, these include Crater Maker (which is also in a currently running Humble Bundle), Out There, Orbit, and Ascent – The Space Game (love that title). In the more casual gaming column, we have Space Smasher and Luna’s Wandering Stars. Check ‘em out!

Finally, in sales, GamersGate is having a massive Red Carpet sale which includes a bevy of space games and so much more I don’t even have the time to list ‘em all here. Then, on Steam, today’s daily deal happens to be everything Strike Suit Zero related, and the weekly deals include the fourth and fifth installements of the Space Empires games.

Whew! That was a ton of work, but y’all are worth it. :) I know I keep saying I’ll do these more frequently, but but I really do hope to do them somewhat regularly. :) Thanks for reading folks, and have a great day! :)

News Hands!

Newsiness! Yay!

Hello my friends, and happy hump day! The news has piled up again, so it’s time for me to throw it back at you, like a mama bird feeding her young or something. ;) With that lovely image in mind, let’s dive in, shall we?

Wait, we’re not done, as two bundles have some spacey game goodness. First is the Kingdoms Bundle which has Sword of the Stars Complete for $3.01 at the moment. Secondly, Groupees has an Indie Bundle which includes Starpoint Gemini for $1, or also Haegemonia Gold for $4.

That’s it folks, have a great day!

Spacey Gamey Newsiness 1/13/14: LIKE A PHOENIX RISING FROM THE ASHES Edition ;)

It's the News!

Hello my friends, and welcome to NEWS. ;) I’m starting the year from scratch, as I had way too many news thingies in my queue slowing me down, so this is news from the past couple of weeks or so. I’m really gonna strive to do this more regular-like, but no promises. There’s a ton of fun stuff here, and as always, videos are embedded below. :) Now, let’s get on with it. :)

  • Void Destroyer – OMG according to the game’s Kickstarter, the early-released version of the game is going to be on Steam THIS WEDNESDAY! YAY! Two new trailers have been released as well, which will be embedded below.
  • FleetCOMM : Operation VigriorTwo updates in the last several days explain why the project is behind, and where it’s going from here. I’m still excited to play the thing my own self. There’s also a video below of the game’s dynamic planet generator.
  • Ring Runner – The Videogame Backlog has a review of the game which is fairly positive. There’s also a video Q&A with the devs on the Sweet!Creeper YouTube channel
  • Wing Commander: Armada – According to the CIC, an enterprising fan has launched a server through Classic Gaming Arena for up to sixteen players.
  • Super Wing Commander – Also according to the CIC, the folks at Edge Magazine took a look at the classic 3DO version of the game.
  • Wing Commander: Prophecy – Finally from the CIC, an enterprising fan has written an upgrade patch for the OEM version of this game which, back in 1997 came with the Real3D Starfighter and missed out on the advanced effects put out by the 3dFX version, and brings the OEM version up to use OpenGL. I love fans that do stuff like this.
  • Wings of Saint Nezaire – There’s a new video on the official site showing off the cockpit of the new Cobra heavy fighter, also embedded below.
  • Eterium – On the game’s Kickstarter is a new update talking about a new demo, the beta being approved on Desura and much more
  • Buzz Aldrin’s Space Program Manager – The game is undergoing an evolution of sorts, which will include a new campaign, widescreen support and more.
  • Predestination – The folks behind this game have launched another Kickstarter for a 3D ship designer, and is already well past its goal. If you missed the last one, check this out.
  • PULSAR: Lost Colony – There are two development videos on YouTube (and embedded below) talking about the new life support system and the player hub.
  • Rogue System – There’s a new development video talks about one of the fighter’s modular cockpit, which looks awesome.
  • Rodina – A new version of the game ADDS HEADLIGHTS! OMG YAY! Oh, and also gamepad support, sure, but HEADLIGHTS!
  • Star Citizen – The official site has a new Ten for the Chairman Q&A installment with Chris Roberts, a Q&A with Drake Cutlass designer Patrick Thomas (along with work-in-progress pics of the Cutlass), a galactic guide to Drake Interplanetary and the Magnus system, and a new lore builder installment on squad celebrities. On Stick and Rudder, they have five reasons why it’s not a PVP game.
  • Drox Operative – There are new reviews of the expansion over on RPG Codex and Christ Centered Gamer, as well as some new patches for the game as well.
  • Kickstarters – Thanks to Goomich for pointing out two spacey Kickstarters I missed, New Orbit and Space Pioneer, both of which could use some help. Universe Rush could also use some assistance.
  • Galactic Starfighter – has a link to a recent development video that shows off some gameplay and gives a final release date of February 4th.
  • Infinite Pixels – A new milestone version of the game (0.5.0) adds a ton of crap to the game, like a jetpack, asteroids (with mining, yay!) and more! I really need to try this one out.
  • Starship Corporation – A new version of the alpha is out that adds a power grid, a basic tutorial and more.
  • Deep Space Settlement – Tons of videos from these folks, such as wishing us a happy new year, showing smooth camera transitions along with in-game fog, along with a 3D render of a frigate,  synchronized firing, a dual spline cruiser and a utility spline as well. Wow these guys are busy, can’t wait to actually play the thing. ;)
  • Approaching Infinity – A new post on Kickstarter talks about the game’s randomized crafting system.
  • M.O.R.E. – Space Sector has a new article checking in with the developer a year after their successful Kickstarter.
  • Star Trek Online – There’s a new dev article looking at the sexy-as-hell Atrox Cruiser.
  • Kerbal Space Program – The Squad guys received honorable mention at the IGF. Yay! Also, amazing YouTuber Das24680 has posted the last in his long line of Kerbal videos.
  • Vendetta Online – A new patch adds crossfading music, new kill-on-sight statuses and more.
  • Wayward: Terran Frontier – Two updates on the site talk about a new content patch and being on Steam Greenlight, as well as a look ahead.
  • Infinite Space 3 – The latest update shows some game editor footage and talks about how their engine is coming along.
  • Limit Theory – The latest update shows off new AI, a new UI and shinier graphics. Preeeeeetttyyyyyy…
  • EVE Online – The Mittani has an intriguing article entitled The Human Nature of EVE which is pretty compelling.
  • Stars of Call – Over on our own forums, Mutos has put out a new version of the game with more border stations and much more! Check it out, it’s free!
  • Sublight – Found this new game on Desura, hope to check it out soon and I hope you do too. ;)
  • And Here the Wheel – The author of the Elite: Dangerous tie-in novel has a recent update on his blog about how the book is coming along.

Finally, in related news, a new dev video showing off AMD’s Mantle technology has some space battle porn (though it’s a tech demo and not an actual game). Finally, new came through that Mobygames has been purchased by Blue Flame Labs LLC, which is great because it seemed to be languishing under GameFly. I love the site and use it quite often for its extensive knowledgebase of classic gaming, and you should too. ;)

That’s it folks, and thank GAWD because I need a nap. Whew! :) Enjoy all the news and videos below, and have a great day!

Spacey Game News and Deals 11/4/13: Lots of Meat on the Bone Today…

It's the News!

It’s the News You Know and Love…

Hellloooo my friends, and happy Monday! It’s time for another news digest, as I’ve gotten to that point where I have enough news to make one, and am gonna make the dang time needed to write one. :) There’s plenty to go over, so let’s dive in, shall we? (Remember, all vids are embedded after the cut)

In somewhat relevant news, the Escapist has an odd list of the eight best giant video game spaceships. Then, reader Stephen Cameron sent in a video of his own procedural starship creator, similar to the one I posted the other day, which looks damned cool and runs in C I believe.

Finally, in deals, GamersGate is having a Stardock midweek sale with all the usual suspects present.

That’s it for today folks, have a great one!

Spacey Gamey News and Deals 8/10/13-9/3/13: A News Post So Big I Hope It Doesn’t Break the Site…

Help Me Puppy! I'm Burred in News!

Help Me Puppy! I’m Burred in News!

Holy crap, newsiness! It’s been a while since I posted some of this stuff, but DAAAAAYUM has life been crazy. Work has been INSANE, home life has been busy and I had a weird slightly-depressive funk I had to work my way through (nothing bad, just turning 40 stuff mostly), but things are balancing out again, which means it’s time for NEWS, and hooooooly crap is there a ton (over 180 items). Several weeks worth of stuff from all over the map (so much so that this post will likely be written over a mult-day period). This post will be so damned big I’ll have to put it behind a cut just to help make the front page look sane, so here goes…

Spacey Game Newsies and Dealsies 7/24/13: Getting-Back-On-The-Horse Edition

C'mere Buddy, I Need to Get Back on You! ;)

C’mere Buddy, I Need to Get Back on You! ;)

Hellllloooooooooo my beloved friends, how are you? I hope y’all are having an excellent hump day so far. On my end, I’ve not played much lately, but I did see Pacific Rim again last night, which was awesomely exhausting. If y’all haven’t seen it, you NEED to, especially on as big as screen as possible. We’re not here to talk movies, though (unless it’s Pacific Rim talk, then CHAT AWAY), but videyagames, so let’s get to it!

  • Atari Properties – The big news on the minds of spacey gamers is where Atari’s various properties have landed. According to these court documents (thanks Goomich!), Wargaming is the new owner of the Master of Orion IP, while Stardock now owns the Star Control IP. You can read more on The Escapist and IncGamers about the Star Control acquisition, and there’s a post from Stardock’s Brad Wardell about the acquisition. Thanks to Blues for the links. I’m honestly not entirely sure how to feel about this news, but it’s too early to decide whether this is a good or bad thing. Stardock has said they want to start work on a Star Control reboot this year, but will it be the same? I mean, we already have the Ur-Quan Masters after all. I guess we’ll see what happens in time. What do you guys think?
  • Homeworld – Over on Polygon, the Gearbox folks go into detail on how they aquired the Homeworld IP from THQ in their bankruptcy auctions.
  • Buzz Aldrin’s Space Program Manager – Last week I went to Slitherine and Matrix Games’ presentation at Historicon, which included a lot of info about this game. I’ll be writing my own report soon, but they’ve also posted their presentation as well, along with a video from Buzz Aldrin himself, who sadly had to cancel his appearance at the event. Lots of good stuff in there.
  • Ring Runner – IGN has released a Let’s Try video of them playing the game, which I’ll also embed below. I’m currently working on a review of this one, so stay tuned.
  • Star Citizen – There’s a new galactic guide to Hurston Dynamics to add some more in-universe flavor.
  • Vendetta Online – There’s a new version of the game that adds high-res planets, procedural nebula backgrounds and more. They also have added Oculus Rift support to the game.
  • Beyond Beyaan – There’s a new blog post detailing some new demo races and more race information in the game for y’all to read.
  • Galactose – You can now read about cruiser parts and debris in their latest blog post.
  • Star Conflict – A new update entitled “New Frontiers” adds T5 level ships, new hangers and a new PvE mission.
  • AI War – The latest update, entitled “More Dirty Tricks“, allows you to play some new tricks on the AI.
  • Star Trek Online – There are two new entries in their Legacy of Romulus series, and they’ve also had visits from Massively and Priority One.
  • Endless Space – The folks over at CheatMasters have a review of the Disharmony expansion pack, which I say with no further comment. ;)
  • Deep Space Settlement – There’s a new video of a station tower in the game which I’m posting only because I wanna stop being nagged about it. ;) (Not really, it looks cool, but still…) I’ll also embed the video below.

In deals, there’s another bundle to tell ya about, the Summertide Bundle from Indie Gala which includes the fantastic Space Pirates and Zombies and a ton of other games for $6.42 currently, which is a steal people.

Finally, in related news, the folks at Camel 101 — who made the fun, if flawed Gemini Wars — are making a new tactical combat game called Black Talons, and sent over a teaser trailer for y’all to check out.

That’s it for today folks. Have a great one! :)
