Spacey Game Newsies and Dealsies 3/28/14: The Thank-Gawd-It’s-Friday Edition

News Satellite Dish

Bringing On The News!!

Two news posts within a week? HOW CAN ANYONE LIVE AT THAT SPEED?  I’m unsure my friends…maybe I’ve finally gone mad. But I’ll tell you this, I’m on the upswing in terms of energy and motivation from my low point earlier this week. I therefore wanted to pound out some more news and deals before they piled up too much. Here goes!

Finally, we have a couple of sales. First off, Retrobooster is having a sale wherein it’s 50% off until April 2nd. It’s a really cool game, so check it out!

Then, GOG is having an Interplay Irresistibles sale in which a lot of awesome Interplay games are on sale. This of course means you can get the amazing Freespace 2 for $4.99, as well as its predecessor Descent: Freespace for $2.99. Seriously, folks, if you don’t have Freespace 2, now is the time. They also have excellent sci-fi games such as M.A.X. and Subwar 2050 (which was made by Particle Systems of Independence War fame) among many other excellent games. I’d jump on these if I didn’t already own almost all of ‘em. ;) (P.S. Clicking on those links and buying through ‘em helps the site out, FYI. ;)

That’s it for today folks. Have a fantastic weekend!

Spacey Game News 3/25/14 – There-Went-March Edition

Buried Under News!

Buried Under News!

Hello my friends! I’m sorry I’ve been so absent of late, but wow am I tired! A short time ago, I went to Yosemite for the better part of a week (some pics here) for a wedding in which my girlfriend was the maid of honor. As awesome a time as I had, it was EXHAAAAUSTING and I feel like I’m still recovering from the sleep deficit, so I’ve just only had energy for some basic gaming needs, you know? ;) There’s been a ton of news out since then, however, so I’m gonna try to get to all of it. Here goes!

Wow, that was almost all of March up until now, huh? Yeeesh! We’re not done yet though, as I have some deals as well as some related news. First off, in deals, Steam’s recent rash of weeklong deals includes Space Trader: Merchant Marine for $1.49 (though the page itself says $4.99 for some reason). Finally, in kinda related news, GOG announced that they’ll be supporting Linux starting later this year, which could see some of our favorite spacey classics reaching that platform.

WHEW that was a lot of stuff to get through. This post took forever to write, but y’all are worth it. :) Have a great day folks!

Spacey Game News and Deals 3/4/14: The No-Clever-Tagline Edition

Folded Newspapers

Yay News!

Hello my friends, and welcome to another day of newsiness!! There’s plenty of goodness to get to today, including a bundle and some other stuff, so let’s get to it! Remember, all videos will be embedded below the cut. :)

We’re not done yet folks! First, in the bundle department, Bundle Stars’ Adrenaline Bundle is pretty damned great, as it has the fantastic Ring Runner, and in non-spacey game goodness, also both Etherlords games (which are awesome) and plenty more. Get this one if you can, folks.

Then, in the kinda related department, we have more faction information for Endless Legend, the fantasy strategy game from the Endless Space folks. We also have three new models from SOL Command for use in your space game, including a Personal Mining Unit, a base of operation for the PMUs and a sleek Dobrev frigate.

Finally, in not-related-but-still-interesting news comes word that Kickstarter passed the $1 billion mark in pledges, over $215 million coming from gaming alone, which is pretty awesome. Thanks VGN247 for the heads up!

That’s it for today folks, have a great one!

Spacey News and Dealies 2/28/14: The Where-The-Hell-Did-February-Go Edition…

All those little dots are news stories...

So Many Pieces of News…

Hello my friends, and happy Friday! It’s been a busy week here, but the news has been piling up, so I thought I’d close out the work week with the latest batch of space game news. Let’s do this!

But wait, we’re not done, we have some sales! GamersGate is selling the aforementioned Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion for $19.98, but it’s been cheaper elsewhere so you might wanna wait. You can then get Gimbal in the Indie Royale Pancake Bundle and the AI War collection in Bundle Stars’ Fusion Bundle. Finally, DotEmu has a massive anniversary sale going on with too much stuff to list here.

Finally, amazing site McSweeny’s has an article covering one of the toughest jobs of any starship captain, yet one we don’t see modeled in games often enough. ;)

That’s it folks, have a great weekend!

Spacey Game Newsies and Dealsies 2/25/14: The Holy-Crap-Where-Did-February-Go Edition…

News and Coffee

Both of These in Abundance Today…

Helloooo my friends, and welcome to the NEWS. I can’t believe it’s been almost a month since I did one of these, and I am so sorry for the gap. February’s been a CRAZY month, as it always is for me, and I’ve had to let some of the news go bye bye since it’s a bit on the older side at this point. Therefore, this post will cover the last week or so of news and stuff. With that said, let’s dive in! Remember, all videos will be embedded after the cut.

  • Jumpgate – Not sure why, but registration has been temporarily disabled, which ssssuuuuucks, and totally gets in the way of me trying to recruit more people into the game. I’ll let’cha all know when it’s back up. ;)
  • Deep Space Settlement – There’s a new video showing off some awesome looking gameplay, and new screenshots of shield generators in action. Now stop bugging me, Matthias. ;) (Actually, don’t, someone bugging me would actually be awesome)
  • Elite: Dangerous – Rock, Paper Shotgun has two articles covering the game, one an impressions piece covering the alpha, the other a chatroom article between some of their writers.
  • Wing Commander – The CIC has word of George Oldziey’s Kickstarter campaign and how it’s going, along with some stories he’s shared from his days composing for the third and fourth installments in the series.
  • The Last Federation – According to a post on the official forums, the game has been delayed until April, which personally is fine by me. Get it done right, not quickly, I like to say. :)
  • PULSAR: Lost Colony – The alpha version of the game is on track to be released…OMG, today!…according to their Kickstarter. Can’t wait to get mine, so stay tuned for a preview! :)
  • Interstellaria – The developer shared some pieces from their Design a Ship contest, which I believe is currently ongoing.
  • Kerbal Space Program - The devs have launched a logo contest for the various Kerbin manufacturers, around two dozen in all. Have artistic skills? Check it out!
  • Galaxial – A new blog entry has a stress test video and some new screenshots as well, and it looks to be coming along nicely.
  • Star Citizen – Tons of new stuff lately on this one! From the official site, they announced that they’ve reached $39 million in crowdfunding, with a procedural R&D team being hired as the $41 million stretch goal, which has me damned excited. There’s also a new Ten for the Chairman video, a new episode of The Next Great Starship, a concept art gallery for the Mustang (a new low-level ship in the game) and part four of their ongoing DATELINE: SESEN fiction series. Elsewhere, Eurogamer is reporting that CI has teamed with Warhorse — the developer of the awesome looking Kingdom Come RPG — to help each other make the most of the Crytek engine. Finally, Stick and Rudder looks at the ongoing and confusing backlash effect surrounding the game which, like the author, I don’t understand. WHEW!
  • Tactical Space Command – The Mac/iPad “Harpoon in Space” game has gotten a recent update which includes a scenario editor among other things, and the developer has released a video showing it off. We’ll also have the developer on the podcast in the coming weeks, so stay tuned for that.
  • Void Destroyer – There’s a new Let’s Play video of the game from YouTube user Dealspwn, which is a fun watch. It also reminds me I need to work on mine. ;)
  • Vendetta Online – A new update brings improvemenets to player capital ships, which apparently is a big deal as previously they didn’t work the same way as NPC cap ships did. I could see how that would be damned annoying.
  • Paragon – According to a post on IndieDB, alpha 4 of the game is now available for purchase on their website for a whole $5. The update has new ships, 3D cockpits, mouse flight and more. I totally plan to pick this up soon.
  • Epic Space Game – There’s a new official trailer for the game detailing some of the game’s features.
  • EVE Online – A new comic called EVE: True Stories is available in comic shops or through the Dark Horse Digital app. This comic details the real events surrounding the fall of the Band of Brothers alliance. Nifty! Thanks VG247!
  • Space Engineers – A new version of the game is out, and a new video details all the changes and updates.
  • New Games – Finally, in kinda news, I found a bevy of new games recently through friends or perusing the usual digital distribution sites. In the more serious, core-gamey column, these include Crater Maker (which is also in a currently running Humble Bundle), Out There, Orbit, and Ascent – The Space Game (love that title). In the more casual gaming column, we have Space Smasher and Luna’s Wandering Stars. Check ‘em out!

Finally, in sales, GamersGate is having a massive Red Carpet sale which includes a bevy of space games and so much more I don’t even have the time to list ‘em all here. Then, on Steam, today’s daily deal happens to be everything Strike Suit Zero related, and the weekly deals include the fourth and fifth installements of the Space Empires games.

Whew! That was a ton of work, but y’all are worth it. :) I know I keep saying I’ll do these more frequently, but but I really do hope to do them somewhat regularly. :) Thanks for reading folks, and have a great day! :)

SGJ Podcast #48: Drowning in Immersion

OOHHH! IMMERSION!

OOHHH! IMMERSION!

Hey folks, welcome to the latest episode of the Space Game Junkie Podcast. I apologize for getting this up so late, as Jim sent it to me days ago, but I had the busiest weekend ever, so I didn’t really have time to put it up until now. I also don’t have time to do the detailed show notes this week either (I might have to pair those down in general since they take an awful long time sometimes). :( On a happier note, Jim and I talk about a lot of awesome stuff, like news, games we’re playing and immersion in video games, based on our own experiences plus those you — our awesome readers — shared with us. It made for a great discussion, and we hope you enjoy it. :)

As always, you can leave comments below, or contact us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com if you’d like to contact us directly. Also, while I’m thinking of it, we’re thinking of doing some kind of write-in show, so hey, write us with questions you have and we’ll answer ‘em on a future show. ;) Thanks for listening, as always folks! :)

Spacey Game Newsies and Dealsies 1/31/14: The Holy-Crap-That’s-a-Lot-of-News Edition

Hey Lookit! A New News Graphic! Yay!

Hey Lookit! A New News Graphic! Yay!

Hello my friends, and welcome to Friday! It’s been a nutty week for me, so I apologize for the lack of stuff, but I’m going to try to make up for that today with one Hugh Jass news post. Please join me as I dive into the deep end of this newsiness pool!

  • The Last Federation – Hey, lookit, finally some footage of this game we discussed on our podcast a little while back! Check it out!
  • Star Citizen – A ton of stuff, so let’s not waste time. The Next Great Starship contest begins today, then in-game we have a look at Aegis Dynamics, news fom the Kaizen system and the first episode of Dateline: Sesen. In the real world we have concept shots of an asteroid hangar, a joystick poll, a new lore builder looking at the navy and another episode of Ten for the Chairman. Moving away from the official site, Stick and Rudder has a look at the squad system, and YouTube user starwolf has a video looking at the Constellation. Whew!
  • EVE Online – If you missed it, a massive battle totalling over $300,000 in real-world losses (based on the in-game currency that can be traded for real money) erupted a few days ago once a rent payment was missed, basically. CCP estimates around 7,500 players have taken part in the fracas, which looks pretty impressive. Somewhere in the midst of this, CCP also managed to launch Rubicon 1.1 which fixes a bunch of stuff.
  • Kerbal Space ProgramEurogamer took some time to review the game while Polygon spent some time look at the people behind it along with the game’s history. Both articles are awesome. :)
  • Star Ruler 2 – Thanks to Space Sector for letting us know about a Devstream (their word, not mine) of the game recently, which clocks in at nearly two hours. Wowie. You can also learn more on the podcast we had with ‘em a while back. ;)
  • Elite Dangerous – The latest development diary talking about multiplayer has been released, and you can read all about it on Rock, Paper Shotgun. :)
  • Sierra Ops – I’d never heard of this game until the Indie Games Weblog mentioned it. It looks kinda nifty, and also has an IndieGoGo page going going, so check it out.
  • Wing Commander – Lots of news out of the CIC recently. First, they’ve announced the winners of their 2013 Best Website of the Year contest, and the winner is Howard Day’s Concordia Hanger! Congrats Howard, that thing is AWESOME. They also found a Let’s Play of Prophecy, a review of Wing Commander 2 on Rock, Paper Shotgun, a wooden model of a Confed Hellcat and some art depicting Kilrathi cap ships.
  • PULSAR: Lost Colony – Not just one but TWO video dev updates for your viewing pleasure over on Kickstarter (and below)!
  • Predestination – Their Kickstarter finished VERY successfully indeed, so yay! They also did a livestream answering questions and talking more about the game. We hope to have these folks on the podcast soon, so stay tuned.
  • Beyond Beyaan – Thankfully Brent is still alive (his words) and has an update covering asteroids and more!
  • Eterium – The final version of the beta is nearing completion! YAY! The demo was also updated as well. Can’t wait to play more of this bad boy.
  • GoD Factory: Wingmen – A new blog post details some of the rewards the players receive for completing tasks during a match. They’ve also reached beta, apparently! Yay!
  • Limit Theory – The month is over, which means a new development update! YAY! Can’t wait to watch it! This one covers the a new HUD and more. (Edit: Links fixed, thanks Josh!)
  • Rodina – The votes are in, and apparently Brendan will be working on the nuts and bolts of the game next, including damage and fire in the INSIDE of the ship. LOVE IT.
  • Starpoint Gemini 2RPGWatch points to a preview of the game on GamerFitNation along with two more previews on Monstervine and Twinfinite, while I found the preview on the Escapist entirely on my own. ;)
  • Wayward: Terran Frontier – On their Kickstarter, they have a post covering modding as well as a partnership with Curse, while on their website they announced their own wiki! Yay, I love wikis! Seriously, I love ‘em, so awesome all around. Oh, they also have a patch for their alpha as well (sorry folks, putting this together in and out of order).
  • Deep Space Settlement – Over on Twitter (grumble grumble) there’s a new screenshot of some sexy space paneling. They also have a video on how to build a cruiser.
  • Galactic Civilizations III – Space Sector has a community Q&A with some of the devs behind the game, which is nice, lengthy and detailed.
  • Approaching Infinity – According to a new blog post, you can now purchase an early access version of the game via Itch.io (whom I’ve never heard of) as well as enter a level design contest.
  • Space Engineers – A new dev blog talks about the multiplayer release of the game and how it’s going.
  • Drox Operative – There’s a review of the expansion over on RandomNPC.
  • Distant Worlds – Prolifit YouTuber and Awesome Person Das24680 has a new video in his series of Let’s Play videos on the game.
  • Imperium Galactica – According to Indie Retro News, there’s a new version of OpenIG with a bunch of minor fixes to the open version of this fantastic game (seriously, it’s awesome).
  • Kinetic Void – There’s a new version of the game, according to their Kickstarter, that includes skybox generation, mining drones and more. Might have to try this one again.
  • Galaxy Union – James Allen has a video review of the game on his YouTube channel.
  • Astrobase Command – A new blog post details what they hope is the, short, mid and long term goals for their project, which look pretty reasonable.
  • And Here the Wheel – It’s balls to the wall time for this Elite: Dangerous tie-in novel and its author!
  • Trek73 – Over on what appears to be the official site for the game (where I got a copy for my review at least), there’s a lengthy new post detailing game tactics and usage. Good stuff if you want to give the game a try.

Wowie, you guys, that was around a week’s worth of news. ONE WEEK. 2014 is gonna be buuuuusy, and I hope I can keep up. We’re not done though, as I found some deals for y’all! First, as part of Steam’s current week long deals, you can get SpaceForce: Rogue Universe and Genesis Rising each for $1.25, which isn’t bad as both of these games are at the very least a decent time. Next, GameFly has a sale on several early access games, and this includes:

Just a little more folks! In interesting related stuff, Jim found this thingy that lets you assemble 2D modular spaceships. Then, Rock, Paper Shotgun has an article about a space shuttle simulator in a caravan. Not making that up. Finally, Jumpgate pilot Xog took our recent podcast and made a video of him listening to it while flying around the game.

Oh my god, that post took over two hours in total spread out over a few sessions to put together. Two. Hours. I need a better way to do this, or more time, or something. ;) Don’t worry, I’ll keep doing it because I love you crazy kids, but still, wow. Anyway, have an awesome weekend folks, and may you enjoy lots of gaming time. :)
