Miscellany: Introducing Flight Sim Fridays

One of My Favorites

Hey friends, I am super excited about this new thing I’ll be doing on Fridays, now that I’ve finished Yakuza. I had so much fun over these last several months playing my favorite classic sims that I’m going to make it a weekly thing! Each week, we’ll go through one campaign in one sim until I finish it or get fed up with it. I’m gonna stick to a few things, such as:

Update 12/15/23

I’m updating the rules as follows:

  • I’ll play until my fun runs out. I don’t want any sim to outstay its welcome.

Original Rules

  • We’ll do as many theaters/campaigns as are fun.
  • I’ll complete every training mission.
  • If my pilot dies I’ll just restart a new one and keep going. The primary goal is finishing a campaign.
  • If I find a game too difficult or annoying, I give myself permission to move on.
  • Sims will now be arranged in order of sims I know that will give me joy, versus sims that are experimental as I’ve not played much of them.

This way I can focus on the fun of playing the sim, which is the primary goal isn’t it? :)

Now I have plenty of sims in the pipe, and I’m going to play through them in basically chronological order of release. Here’s the full list, in order:

I’ve decided to have a list of sims I want to spend more time with, because they give me joy, and sims I can spend less time with if they’re not that great because I’m not as familiar with them. These are as follows:

Sims that I Know Will Give Me Joy – These are sims I know I’ll have fun with:

  • Jane’s Fighters Anthology – Current as of 10/11/24
  • EF2000
  • Apache
  • Hind
  • Strike Fighters 2
  • Wings over Flanders Fields

Experimental Sims – I’ll play these more casually as I’ve little experience with them.

  • Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe
  • Gunship
  • F-15 Strike Eagle II
  • Enemy Engaged
  • Chuck Yeager’s Air Combat
  • Harrier Jump Jet
  • Stunt Island
  • Falcon Gold
  • A-10 Tank Killer
  • 1942: Pacific Air War
  • F-14 Fleet Defender
  • Wings of Thunder
  • iF-16/F-16 Fighting Falcon
  • Red Baron 3D
  • European Air War
  • MegaFortress
  • Total Air War
  • Enemy Engaged 2
  • F/A-18 Korea
  • Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3 – Battle for Europe
  • Aces over Europe
  • Aces of the Pacific

Finihed Sims – These are Sims I’ve finished, for now, and might return to at a later date.

  1. F-19 Stealth Fighter – Finished as of 3/24/23, at least for now.
  2. Gunship 2000 – Finished on 8/4/23, at least for now!
  3. Tornado – Finished on 12/15/23.
  4. F-117A Stealth Fighter 2.0 – Finished on 3/15/24.
  5. Novalogic Sim Cavalcade – Playing through all of Novalogic’s flight sims one at a time until they annoy me, then I move on. – Finished as of 4/5/24.
  6. SimCopter – Finished as of 10/4/24.

This is going to be so much fun you guys. I cannot wait to dive into all these classic sims. Please let me know if you have any questions, and I’ll see you in the skies on Friday.
