Sometimes You Wanna Just Shoot Stuff – Weekly Gaming Checkin for 10/21/19

Kinda Hooked

Weekly Gaming Thoughts

Hey friends, happy Monday! I tell y’all, gaming has been good to me of late. Not only has streaming helped me finish some games — which is something I don’t usually do — but I’m always feeling joyous when I find games that really fit my mood at the moment. Lately, I’ve been itching for games where I can just jump in, do a thing, and jump out. I know a lot of games let you save in the middle of what you’re doing, but you’re still in the middle of a thing. I wanna start and finish a thing in a few minutes.

This is why I, and I’ll bring it up again, have been loving Strike Fighters 2. It allows me to play one mission, or three, depending on how much time I have, and each mission is like a little self-contained adventure. In, out, done. I’m also finding I like Destiny 2 for this very reason. I tried D2 ages ago when it hit the Humble Monthly, but for some reason it didn’t click back then. Now, with it’s free-to-play model on Steam, it’s heavily clicked in a big way, which is great. It allows you to not even take a mission or anything if you don’t want to, you can just land in an area, run around and kill some bad guys for a few minutes, which is sometimes all I want. Couple that with missions that don’t take too long, use checkpoints and are split into reasonable time frames and, to me, you have a winner.

What I’ve Been Playing

  • Strike Fighters 2 – Since last week I’ve begun and failed two new campaigns. I’m getting better at it though, as each campaign has me surviving for a bit longer. It’s just been so fun to do a mission and get out as soon as it’s done. I wish every flight sim had an option to do this.
  • Destiny 2 – After talking about it on one of my Discord servers, I decided to finally dive in and take the plunge, and boy am I glad I did. The gunplay is marvelous, the missions are fun, and there seems to be so much to do that I’ll likely be playing it for a while.
  • Star Trek Online – Since my podcast co-host Hunter left EVE, he’s found a new game to obsess over, and is bringing us all with him. I began a new character because I had NO IDEA what I was doing, and am having a good time with all the missions and stuff. The ground combat section is still overtly slow, but now I know that going in.

What I’m Planning on Playing (Besides More of the Above)

  • Hind – Since this’ll be the next flight sim I stream, I gotta refamiliarize myself with it. Very excited about it, to be honest.
  • Evochron Legacy – It’s been a while since I played this, and since I’m gonna start streaming it next Friday, I need to spend a bit of time with it to get my groove back.

So yeah, it is such an amazing time to be a gamer, isn’t it? What are you guys playing of late, and what are y’all obsessed with lately? Thanks for reading, and have a great gaming week!
