Volition Goes to Koch Media in THQ Auction

I Love These Guys…

I want to interrupt whatever the heck it is you’re doing to bring you this verrrrrrry interesting news piece. Today, the auction for the holdings of THQ commenced, and Volition seems to be going to Koch Media for around $22.3 million. You know Volition, right? The folks behind the Saints Row and, especially more important, Freespace series? ;) Now, to be honest, before yesterday I’d never heard of Koch Media, so at first I was like, “Who the heck are these guys?”

Theeeeeeeeeen I saw they publish games through a company called Deep Silver, who I’ve known of for years. These guys have a hand in publishing the X series of space games from Egosoft. This got me VEEEEEEEEEEEERY excited. Now, I try not to give to much into rumor or speculation, so I’ll put this one more in the “dream” column. And I have a dream. I have a dream that Deep Silver, seeing how long lasting and successful the X series is will take a shine to Volition’s Freespace IP, which I’m hoping comes over with them in the sale. Then maybe, just MAYBE, we might at long last see a Freespace 3.

Now again, this is just a dream, but I’m gonna hold onto it with all of my might, even if it’s crazy. Freespace 2 had an amazing ending (well, if you got the good one, anyway, the other was just dang depressing). AMAZING. But it wasn’t the end of the whole story, and I feel we deserve to see that entire story. Freespace 3 is a game that (some of us are) begging to be made, and I can just hope and dream that it might become a reality.

Now tell me, am I alone here? Am I just making the insane ramblings of the ultimate fanboy? I’d love to know what y’all think in the comments. :)

  1. I’m glad to see these IPs going to another gaming company, vs. just investment bankers looking to exploit the “resources”. Love the FP games, Saints Row 3, here’s to Koch/Deep Silver keeping these great franchises going. R.I.P. THQ, the bundle last year was a great last try to keep your company afloat!

  2. I wish Volition, if they still have the IP rights, would bring Freespace 3 on Kickstarter later this year… I don’t think Deep Silver (or Koch Media) would risk to finance it themselves

    1. Pardon my language, but I would KICKSTART THE SHIT OUT OF THAT MOTHERFUCKER. Seriously. ;)

      1. Seconded that :)

By the way, I’ve read some comments from german players about Koch Media and Deep Silver on Rock Paper Shotgun, and people say it’s a mediocre publisher at best. Sad news.

  3. OMG!!! THis finally seems like a golden opportunity to seize the day and kick -start Freespace 3 project!!! Or maybe Even take Freespace 1 and Freespace 2 and include the games as part of Freespace 3!!!! This way players would be able to experience the story from start to finish completely!!! With current Gen graphics!! Can you guys imagine what they could do?????!!!!!! I can!!! I can see that game right in front of my eyes! Freespace started it all and it should be the game to kick start space action/simulation genre back into todays modern hardware and software advancements. These games will mean EVERYTHING to me! I grew up on space shooters, and follow Volition till this day! Cmon guys, show us players what you can do? Please for the sake of the pans revamp this franchise a new!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :) :)

    1. Welcome to the blog, Nik! What concerns me about this is that the original folks behind the first two games would likely have little to do with it, if anything. Also, Stompy Bot just launched an MMO version of Heavy Gear, a previously single player game, so I have little faith in their ability to do the Freespace license justice at the moment. :/

Chime In!
