Site Stuff – No Tags for the Forseeable Future

Friends, ever since starting Space Game Junkie, I’ve been a massive believer in tags. I feel they’re great for usability and can really give users another great tool to move around a site and its content.

That was until WordPress unveiled Gutenberg, the block system it uses today.

Now Gutenberg itself, for the most part, is pretty great. I actually like blocks a lot. The problem, however, is tags. Tags have become such an impediment I’ve in some cases stopped writing because of them.

Before Gutenberg, you’d simply add a tag to the sidebar in the editor window and separate them out with commas. It was a simple text list. Now, with Gutenberg, each tag has to do some weird populating thing that changes it from simple text to some kind of graphical element including the text. It’s like changing it from simple text to a bubble with the text in it.

The problem is the tags don’t stick. THEY NEVER STICK. I’ll put in a tag and it’ll disappear. Sometimes it’ll reappear a moment later, sometimes it won’t.

The ONLY way I’ve gotten tags to stick is to save them in a separate text editor, separated by commas of course, and then paste the whole kit and kaboodle into WordPress here. It’s a pain in the ass, it ruins my flow, and it makes writing stuff here less fun and more of a chore, which I DO NOT want.

So until this is fixed, if ever, I’m not gonna use tags. I hope this isn’t an inconvenience, and it shouldn’t be as WordPress’ search functionality still works great, but I just wanted to let y’all know why you won’t be seeing tags for a while. I’m actually rather upset about it, because I LIKE tags, but I’ve found if it’s a chore to do this writing stuff, then I’m less likely to do it at all.

Thanks for understanding y’all, and please let me know if you have any questions.
