FTL: The Game Makes a Big Resurgence

FTL is a Kickstarter Darling

So y’all might recall this little spacey rogue-type game I mentioned a few months ago called FTL: The Game. It was up for an IGF award at the time, so no one was really able to play it but the judges, which kinda made me sad, but I signed up for further updates.

Well, yesterday I got an email that says that first, you can play the game’s demo on OnLive — which for some reason I’m hesitant to try because I don’t wanna sign up for OnLive, not even sure why that is — AND that they’ve launched a Kickstarter page to get the funding they need to bring the game to a full release. As of right now, they’re at 186% of their goal, reaching over $18,000 of their goal of $10,000, which is pretty gorram amazing, if you ask me. If you support ’em through Kickstarter, you’ll get access to the beta in a little while as well.

I’ll be keeping an eye on this game, but it’s good to see not only development moving forward on another space game, but that it’s getting so much support from fans. It’s stuff like this that makes me hope one day the bigger companies will see how viable space games are and begin investing in them again.

Edit: One day later, on 2/29/12, they’ve made 450% of their goal, as they’ve raked in $45,453 in pledges as I write this. That is just AMAZING. I hope it shows other developers how interested folks are in space games!!!

  1. I replied their tweet about Onlive thanking them for making it available, but telling them that I just couldn't bring myself to signup for yet another online site that I'll probably never use again.

I guess Onlive and the IGF have some collaboration going right now, but I'd rather wait. I was mulling kickstarter too, but I guess that's not necessary now either. They just tweeted that they passed 200%.

    1. Yeah, for some reason I can't bring myself to sign up for it either. Not sure why, but yeah, it looks like they have a dealyo with the IGF folks to showcase their games for a couple of weeks, so it makes sense. And I'd donate anyway if you want into the beta, or to help give them the money to make it even more awesome. I put in $40 so I could get the soundtrack too. :)

  2. I've been following this game for a while and since I'm a bit of a kickstarter addict, I jumped at this opportunity… :) Looks like it'll be a awesome game, and if $10-25 can help them make it happen (and maybe faster) plus get me into a closed beta, then sign me up.. :) Kickstarter is sooo dangerous… It threatens to suck all my monies…

    PS: loved the Firefly reference.

  3. Hah, yeah, Firefly has definitely woven its way into my speech on a regular basis. I find myself talkin' more like Mal than anyone else. ;)

    1. I really need to watch that show all the way through again… It's been too long since I've done that. It is after all my favorite show and probably the only TV show (besides B5) that I could watch over and over and not get bored…

tl;dr Firefly is too awesome for words.

      1. Yeah, it really is something special. It was my favorite too until Supernatural supplanted it. ;)

        1. Supernatural supplanting Firefly? I don't know… While I haven't seen Supernatural (have heard of it) it'd be pretty darn hard to be "better" than Firefly.. :p

          1. I know, right? Given my love of spaceships you'd think it'd be a given, but Supernatural, to me, just hits so many right notes, plus there's more to love. I do have a tattoo for both, however. ;)
