(I'm catching up on the podcast...)

I love the idea of an RTS that lets you control units directly -- the last time I saw something like that attempted was Ambrosia Software's Ares, back in the '90s.

I'm definitely going to take a closer look at Void Destroyer.

Pauls! I know it's been a while since this episode went out, but (thanks to Metafilter) I just found out how amazingly awful the game whose box art graces it was.

That particular "Space Pirates" was originally a light-gun arcade game, by the people who made Mad Dog McCree, and there is footage (with commentary) from the original arcade version at http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/03/02/saturday-video-crapshoot-american-laser-games/ -- the beginning of the video shows the game's intro, but discussion of Space Pirates proper starts just after 11 minutes in.

Thanks - what I think is a almost universal thruth is that a lot (I can't say all because I haven't met all) people greatly enjoy creating something. That's really what makes us humans what we are. So it can be incredibly rewarding and motivating to go down these paths. There's really no way to fail because something is always gained.
